An Interview with YYC Events Blogger - Sarah Sociables

One of the many amazing perks that come with being a photographer is getting to meet and collaborate with interesting and inspiring people. Sarah Sociables is no exception, and has fast become one of my favourite return clients! We’ve worked together many times and what always strikes me most about Sarah is how chill and down to Earth she is. I finally had to ask this fabulous lady a few burning questions. Check out her answers below. 😊

What brought you to Calgary? Was there something that drew you here?
“I ended up in Calgary because this is where the jobs are. Hahah. I went to school to be a marketing researcher and there aren’t a lot of those position in small town Alberta. 😊  Wasn’t planning on staying forever, but here I am 10 years later.”

What do you love most about Calgary’s vibe?
“I think the vibe Calgary gives off is totally dependent on your perspective.  Coming from small town Alberta, Calgary is still “The Big City” to me. I love the variety, diversity, and that new interesting things are continually popping up for me to do and see. However, if you’re from a bigger city or have lived in Calgary your whole live I see how you could find Calgary boring or even a hick town. To those people, I see where they are coming from, but they should also recognize how far Calgary has come and how we do get the big city trends that come from New York or Chicago but it just takes us a little longer. 😊  I like to think we are getting a little cooler each year. “

What was the biggest driving factor behind creating the Sarah Sociables brand?
“I just wanted to share stuff I like. I love attending fun events and I love checking out new trendy restaurants and I wanted a group of people who were also excited about that.  Before Sarah Sociables, I would bring up cool events to my friends or pitch going to a new restaurant and I couldn’t understand why they weren’t into it. I had to accept it’s not for everyone I had to go out and find my people! So that’s exactly what I did.”

What’s one event per year that you never miss?
“I have been to Calgary Beerfest every year for the last probably 10 years. :D I love trying new beers and it’s just a friendly fun event I think is great. It never gets old.”

What’s your favourite restaurant currently?
“People always ask my favorite restaurant and I don’t have one!! It honestly depends on what type of food I’m feeling. If you made me pick, I would say I’m always down for pizza so maybe Noble Pie or Connie & Johns.”

I had to go out and find my people! So that’s exactly what I did.

What’s one event or place you would love to see in Calgary that isn’t already here?
“I love comedy and I wish Calgary’s comedy scene was a little stronger. It’s not so much an issue with the local talent, but a lot of the smaller shows are poorly attended and it’s so tough on comedians to do a show for a half empty room. So I guess, what I’m saying is, I wish that there was more support for comedy in Calgary so that the comedy scene could really blow up and become a hot place for major comedians to do shows.”

Where can people find you?
“I’m on literally every platform, so wherever you are, you can find me too under Sarah Sociables.  Right now, I would say my main posting places are Instagram and TikTok.  I tend to post wherever I have the greatest reach because I want to have the best method of spreading the word about cool things to Calgarians!”

What’s next for Sarah Sociables?
“OMG I am juggling so many things already haha. I would say I would love to do more in person events, I fit them in here or there every 3-4 months but Covid has really interfered with that and made me so nervous about committing time to planning something only for it to not happen. I definitely have PTSD. Haha THAT SAID, I do plan on doing a few events in 2022.  There won’t be many! So grab tix when one pops up!”
